Joyce

by Alinar Dapilos

12 min, Canada, English & Tagalog

Living in a new country, Joyce, a young Filipino nanny, has a deep desire and passion for rap music – regularly dreaming of being a successful rapper.  However, her extreme shyness prevents her from being able to perform in front of others.  Already faced with the challenges of adjusting to a new country, things become harder for her when news from her homeland reveal that her father has had a heart attack, requiring unaffordable medicine.  Feeling helpless and lost, Joyce’s only escape is through her lyrics.

A first-generation Filipino-Canadian, Alinar has always had an interest in creating films and videos for his friends and family. Originally from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Alinar is now based in Vancouver, British Columbia where he graduated from InFocus Film School’s film production program.
